Concrete is a general term for engineering composite material bonded by cementing material. The usual concrete stands for cementing material, such as cement and sand aggregate. Also known as general concrete, the concrete is formed by mixing with water and without admixture at a specific ratio followed by the processes of mixing, molding and maintaining. Therefore, it is widely applied in civil engineering.

As the major material for civil engineering, the concrete is the artificial stone after being hardened. Since concrete is rich in deposit, low in price and simple in production process, its application becomes wider and wider. In addition, concrete has the features of high compressive strength, strong durability and wide strength grade range. These characteristics make the concrete extensively used not only in civil engineering, shipbuilding industry, mechanical industry, marine development, geothermal engineering, etc.

Inorganic cementing material like cement, lime and gypsum mixed with water has plasticity. And through condensation and hardening under chemical and physical interactions, strength is produced. Generally speaking, drinking water can meet the requirements of concrete mixing water. Too much acid, alkali, salt and organic matter in the water will exert an adverse effect on concrete. Aggregate has not only the function of filling but has a deep influence on properties, such as, bulk density, strength and deformation and the like.
