Procedure of gravity separation in ore dressing

Gravity separation is an industrial method of separating two components, either a suspension, or dry granular mixture where separating the components with gravity is sufficiently practical: i.e. the components of the mixture have different specific weight. All of the gravitational methods are common in the sense that they all use gravity as the dominant force. Gravity separation is used in a wide variety of industries, and can be most simply differentiated by the characteristics of the mixture to be separated - principally that of 'wet' i.e. - a suspension versus 'dry' -a mixture of granular product. Often other methods are applied to make the separation faster and more efficient, such as flocculation, coagulation and suction. The most notable advantages of the gravitational methods are their cost effectiveness and in some cases excellent reduction.

There are a multitude of ways to achieve gravity separation, the most common being static separation, centrifugation, and jigging. For all methods, a proper water balance in the suspension is important to ensure efficient separation, and the fluid must be free of slimes, which increases the viscosity and hinders particle movement. For the most effective gravity separation, particle sizes should be relatively close, with very small or very large particles screened out.

In heavy media processing flow, gravity separation involves using a mixture of fine media material, such as magnetite (SG 5.1) or ferrosilicon (SG 6.8), suspended in slurry of water, to produce media slurry with a specific gravity that will allow low density material(s) to float, and other high density material(s) to sink. T he SG of separation is the SG of the media slurry, and can range from 1.45 (for coal), to around 2.8 (for diamonds). The separation principal is very simple, if the 'liquid' media has a SG of 2.5, every mineral with a SG greater than 2.5 will sink and those lighter than 2.5 will rise to the top and float.

During the gravity separation process, the gravity separation equipment is the major element. Typically units are installed in the recalculating load with IPJ feed consisting of up to 14mm mill discharge or cyclone underflow. IPJs are also installed in alluvial operations as primary and secondary recovery units.
